I am a veteran Montessori teacher with over fourteen years of teaching experience. My Montessori journey began twenty-five ago when I received my AMI zero to three Assistant to Infancy diploma. At that time, I also completed a Master’s degree in Education. I went on to teach at the zero to three level for ten years in Chicago at Near North Montessori School where I not only served children and families but also trained and supervised new teachers. During this time, I honed my skills as a Montessori educator and discovered my natural ability to work with children and parents. The zero to three age group is a group I intuitively understand and effortlessly connect with. I find their curiosity and wonder a joy to be around and am constantly in awe of their natural and spiritual intelligence. In 2003 and 2004 completed a Master’s degree in Child Development and Social Work, respectively, and continued my work with children and families as a helping professional.
I returned to the world of Montessori in 2016 and immediately saw a need for a quality zero to three year old program. In 2017, YMS opened its doors with a Toddler Community known as the "Biltmore Campus". In 2019 we opened the "Arden Campus" where we started our first primary program for 3 to 6 year olds. In 2020 we combined both programs at the Arden Campus and now have two primary classes and one toddler class.
When not at YMS, I am usually with my family. I have three middle school aged children (who keep me on my toes!) and am married to my husband, who is also an educator. We love hanging out together with our dog Goldie, going camping when we can, and playing dominoes. We also love our Friday movie nights with pizza and Twizzlers!
Lead Primary Teacher
I moved to Asheville in the spring of 2008. I started taking courses at Ashford University and obtained my Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education in 2014. During my studies, I started working with preschool children at Head Start in Buncombe County in 2011. In those six years with Head Start, I graduated and started working towards her North Carolina Teacher’s Certification and license, which I obtained in 2016. Once I had her license, I started my Montessori training with CGMS (Center for Guided Montessori Studies). I have taught in a Montessori classroom since the summer of 2017. I have also maintained my CPR/First Aid certification since 2011. I have been “licensed to parent” (foster care) since 2016 and most recently, “licensed to legally parent” (adoptive parent) since 2019. Let’s just say I love teaching and children.
When I am not in school (which rarely happens), I enjoy playing and working outside. I enjoy anything on the water or land and you would easily find me on the river or on a trail! I feel most comfortable in the company of small humans and animals. Growing up with a brother, she is not afraid to get dirty and likes to take things apart to see how they work.
I first began my Montessori journey when I enrolled my older daughter, Lily in a Montessori toddler program. I went on to obtain my Infant/Toddler Certification from the Center for Montessori Education of North Carolina in 2017 while teaching at Greensboro Montessori School. I love everything about the 2-3 age range and working with the toddlers at YMS! My younger daughter, Ava, attends Black Mountain Montessori School, and my older daughter, Lily, attends Artspace Charter School.
I very happily relocated to Asheville at the end of 2018 from the NC Triad and love living in Montreat and enjoying all the area has to offer. On the weekends I can be found baking, hiking or canoeing with my and my fiancé's 4 children.
Teaching Assistant/Morning Primary Program
My true passion is working with children and being a part of their growth and learning process. For the past 10 years working with special needs preschool children has taught me to be an excellent listener and has given me tremendous passion for helping them develop their individual social and emotional skills. I am a true believer in teaching with love and compassion. Originally from Atlanta, the NC Smoky Mountains were calling my name to enjoy my second passion...being in nature and finding new hiking adventures.
Teaching Assistant/Afternoon Primary Program
7 years ago I left Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and made the move to the mountains I now call home! I was a professional baker before becoming a teacher assistant. I have been enjoying turning my passion for early childhood education, Montessori teachings, and respectful communication into more than just something I practice at home. When I’m not at school I enjoy hiking with my daughter, listening to and playing lots of music, and getting into all sorts of arts and crafts!
